Things have changed, a whole lot. But mostly for the better. I'm getting to know myself more, and basking in this fulfilled feeling I have; the feeling that you can only get when you know you're moving forward and about to crush it.

Being onstage, literally and figuratively, is a strange thing. All this time is spent practicing, preparing, perfecting, preventing. Generally ruling out all fuck-ups that could potentially be your fault is key.

Very key.

But as prepared as you can be, everything boils down to the moment. Some things can just be out of your control, and then what do you do? You’d better be good at winging it, that’s for damn sure; hopefully, that’s one of the things you obsessively practiced before you donned your stage-confidence and walked up those wooden steps into the spotlight.

Before two weeks ago, it’d been a long time since I’d been onstage. I was just going to be in the background – which was a huge relief, because being the center of attention is overrated – but my nerves were close to shot. It just wasn’t something that I was used to anymore; I remember looking out into crowds full of new faces and wondering how many of them were waiting for me to fall off the stage, or lose one of my braids.

I couldn’t stop cracking my knuckles. I was leaned up against a pool table trying not to think about it, joking with one of my closest friends while compulsively scanning the crowd. Support is crucial in times like these. One familiar face in the crowd is all it takes to make everything okay. Yeah, you’ve got people you know standing in the crowd; fans, close friends who know all your secrets, maybe even your significant other. Everyone has that one person whose upward gaze when the house lights are low can make the perfect setting for crushing it onstage.

That’s my brother. When I saw his giant round head bobblin’ through the crowd last Friday night in New York City, I lost the little bit of cool I do have and immediately attacked him with a bear hug, eliciting a laugh and just as strong an embrace from him in return. Objectively speaking (seriously), Bruh is the coolest person anyone in his life knows. It’s hard to say exactly why. It could be his strength, his intelligence, uniqueness, his sense of humor and silliness - just the hours he spent during my childhood mastering the art of being “that dude.”

But for me, it’s the time that he spent after school assisting me in my penmanship homework before helping me cross the street to ride my bike. It’s how dedicated he was to making sure my three-pointer was perfected before my recreational basketball game on Saturdays, or practicing punches with me in the backyard. I look back and I see it in every time he told me he couldn’t make it to a concert I was playing in, and then showed up front row center to surprise me. I see it when I think of how much I wanted to be like him when I was younger, and how hard he was on me about being proud of who I am. It’s all in how he was committed to making sure that I was not going to end up like so many lost and misguided young women out here that don’t recognize their own worth.

We come from great stock, of course, but Bruh’s always been dedicated to making sure I celebrate the fact that I am my own person with my own mind and talents. My excitement over his attending events and meeting the people in this city that I hold in such high regard isn’t just about baby sister seeking big bro’s approval. It’s about how supportive he’s been of my every breath from day one, and how that support will never, ever go away. I love him, and that is why when I look down from the stage and see him clapping and bopping and flashing his camera in my face (Nikon flashes are no joke; I was still seeing spots 30 minutes later), I feel my confidence rising and hear the Delph family motto in my head even more strongly: Ain’t nothin’ to it but to do it.

The past couple months have been tough, wrought with a lot of contemplation and planning for the future. Everyone is always going through something, and everyone needs support. We’re all taught in this country that the only person you can truly count on is yourself, but that notion doesn’t always get you through the rain. Even if you haven’t known someone for very long, the simple fact that one person celebrates who you are and what you do – and wants to see you grow and succeed – is so motivating. The world sucks, and this has never not been true, but to be skeptical of everyone who shows you positivity is to wind up solo in a heartbeat.

I suppose what I’m trying to say is that although keeping your head up and eye on the prize will get you there in due time, sometimes it helps to think of the one person you know for sure will always walk beside you, and will help you when you trip (even if they might giggle a little first – Bruh keeps it real). You may not need someone to hold your hand through everything, but unconditional love and genuine encouragement can get you so, so far. No one can truly do it alone.

Bruh has faith in me, and that faith alone makes me feel like I can do anything – even sing again.

recently i thought about carrying around post-its to write little helpful notes to my fellow citizens of philadelphia. it started with septa, and soon i found myself thinking up little reminders to everyone around me...

but then i thought it'd be far more entertaining to put them up on twitter.

thus, my lily love letters were born - and no one is safe.

dear chick in the el station:
we all realize your phone is also an mp3 player.
now simmer down and put some earbuds in that shit.
love, lily

dear dude waiting for the train beside me:
don't hock a loogie onto the tracks and then give me bedroom eyes.
turn off.
love, lily

dear conductor:
hard to believe, i know, but the el is a high-speed train.
this cruise control shit ain't gon' cut it, boo.
love, lily

dear young parents over there:
it's (barely) okay to be a slave to fashion, but cutting your infant son's hair into a mohawk when he is not yet old enough to keep saliva in his mouth at least 40% of the time that he is awake?not.
love, lily

dear dude sitting in front of me on the el:
quit trying to be cool and take a lesson from your wingman.
take a bath, read a book, and leave me be.
by the way, clean clothes are not the enemy,
and you are mistaken if you believe that every time you do your laundry,
the terrorists win.
love, lily

dear septa worker:
please do not blame me because you don't have change for a twenty.
no, i do not know what time you open, nor so i want "all [your] ones."
no, i will not "give [you] at least an hour"; i have to go to school.
if you could quit bitching for just a moment, sir, you will see that
the change you are so reluctant to give me will include a ten-dollar bill.
have a nice day, and welcome back from the strike.
love, lily

dear chick i see every day @ weiss [hall]:
there are two doors for a reason. i am going out; you are coming in.
today i'll give you an ultimatum: for every time you stand there
impatiently waiting for me to come out of the left door -
when there is a perfectly functional right door not being used -
i am going to take my sweet ass time doing so.
no, i'm not an ornery bitch (at least today).
i can just out-asshole you, 60% of the time, every time.
love, lily

dear behavioral analysis classmate:
i hate group work just as intensely as the next socially awkward 23-year-old,
but believe you me, son... group work goes FAR easier when you
actually read the material.
i'm not gonna carry your lazy ass for 80 minutes, my dude.
love, lily

so it's whatever i want wednesday, and what i want is to go to the Phrequency birthday party tonight. that's right! it's been a whole year of connecting artists, fans, and all types of local music enthusiasts and just generally creating one big happy phamily.

and we's about to celebrate!

tonight at kung fu necktie, you'll be seeing performances by some of philly's premier artists, including the supah-talented Emcee Unless (who designed that beautiful flyer you're looking at);the city's best spin-doctor himself, mr. DJ PHSH; and everyone's favorite party-starter Vanache, who is performing onstage for the first time since his debut @ the TLA. who knows, you might even catch a taste of Philly's favorite hippity-hops & reggae man doing his thing...

needless to say, i'm crazy excited about this.

it's free, it's @ 8, and it should definitely be in your plans. make sure you hit the links above to find out more about any of these amazing philadelphia artists. trust, you won't be disappointed.

later, loves!

today's been a hell of a day! your tuesday tweets will be up tomorrow. thanks, loves!

okay, okay, i did fumble (a little). i didn't have a topic for today. but it's only because i'm on my grind heavy! promeso.

ramblings of the city's princess (according to AKiLLES) - i'm excited for halloween, not just because i'll be dressed to death tomorrow night, but i am picking my car up during the day. as some of you know, i was involved in an accident not too long ago (hydroplaned on a highway). it's tough being without a car, especially with my family living in a different state. but hopefully all that will change in the next few days!

also, i found my camera, which means a whole new lot of goodies for ya'll, and more picture-taking for me.

speaking of which, ladies, make sure you look your best tomorrow night! i will be taking photos and deciding on the best costumes in philly right here at the LilyBlog. i think i'll call it Lily's Sexy Six: Halloween Edition.

what do you think? ;-D

i recently realized how far away we are from summer. my brain's aghast - how did we go from this...

to this - and so quickly?

sighface. i found all my pictures and videos from my adventures this summer, so i'm in reminisce mode. one of my favorite slow, hot afternoons was spent walking the south street area checking out all the brazilian festividades that were taking place in august. my favorite was hanging out on the steps near the dance school and listening to xande cruz and the batukis band. and, i think there were caipirinhas served, if i'm not mistaken (which were really, really good!).

i've never seen a band where the lead singer also plays percussão. that is pretty dope. i ended up going online later that night and trying to find out more about them, especially videos...

it's hard to find one that doesn't sacrifice sound or sight, but either way, in every video i've found, everyone's having muito divertimento.

here's um vídeo i took that day. this little baby was killin' it! 'scuse the sound and sideways image. you know how cell phones are... smh...

i call her a pouca rainha da samba. ya'll better pick up these mini-portuguese lições i'm dropping on you (this means you, rashid!). i expect gifts on teacher appreciation day.

i'm definitely looking forward to the next time i can see xande and the band. i missed them when they performed at world cafe live. suuuuck!

it's about that time; muitos beijos, os meus amores. time for lily to return to earth and get back on her grind.

yesterday while doing a little cyber-footwork for the boss, i turned on the tube for a bit and came across a couple tom & jerry cartoons (from the fred quimby era, muitos beijos if you know who i mean). got me to thinking, what happened to all the old-style 2D cartoons we used to love from back in the day?

youtube happened to them.

remember this one? the little owl boy's name was Owl Jolson (a play on Al Jolson). there was a tad bit of controversy about this one for some reason, but i still love it, especially when the little owl makes that screwface while singing his parents' song.

call me a nerd, but when i was a little lily, i adored this cartoon. it's pretty abstract but teaches a good lesson, and is fun to watch. especially when the squiggle comes onscreen.

this is absolutely my favorite warner brothers' cartoon of all time. the musicianship and the timing of the animation are unparalleled by any other piece that came out in its time, and most hand-drawn pieces that come out now. i'm in awe of this one every time i see it; it's definitely one of my faves on youtube. and i know all the words, just like a good geek should!

this one just never ceases to make me laugh. tex avery cartoons make my day. and little red turns into a hot mama later! speaking of her...

i love little red's new york accent in this one. so funny.

little bit of wednesday treats for my sweets! catch ya'll tomorrow for throwback thursdays, when i clean out my photos and vids. beijos!

today's tuesday tweets are brought to you by the tech lab, because my computer wouldn't let me post for the last week or so. anybody want to buy me a new one? :-D

got some real sweet ones for you today...

this week's tuesday tweets:

so tonight i'll be celebrating acquiring two new students :-D at the open mic @ 40th&walnut upstairs. last week was pretty big, lots of talent, and tactylics came through from new york city to see what i was up to :) so i'm hoping this tuesday will be even bigger. we shall see...

this is the funniest thing i've seen all day.

sorry about the crazily sporadic posting, my loves. i'm trying to get together a couple big things for you guys to enjoy. see? lily does love you.

bear with me, i'm still getting used to this sleeping thing.

today's friday fail:

ooh-wee. find more photos of fail @ failblog.org!

i've more to post, but my computer hates me lately :( anybody want to get me a new one?

sigh. blogger hasn't really liked me lately, so let's start this week afresh with tuesday tweets! this week's tuesday tweets come from my very own following list...

this week's tuesday tweets:

the only thing between you and being the heroic badass everyone loves is a massive outbreak of reanimated corpses.

knew a guy that had a bitch of a gf. talked him into slapping her ass & saying "good game" after sex once. she punched him.

glad "hov" is such a cool name. i don't think "allow me to reintroduce myself, my name is CHARLES!" would work as well.

i think "here it comes!" is the funniest thing a guy can say before having an orgasm. well, maybe not funniest... but it's in the top ten.

oh, wait. i did experience on worse than that a long time ago: "uh-oh." (the way a little kid says "uh-oh, i pooped my pants.")

they finally arrested the serial butt fucker. so you can stop sleeping on your stomach with the window open... it's not gonna happen!

tyson [beckford] got legs like baseball bats and i hear he got that nasty wimmens disease

speaking of halloween, i'm casting someone to be my centaur rump! who's down with keeping their head smooshed against my ass all night? hmmm??

why does dunkin donuts coffee taste like soil?

tweet treats:

cracked, the humor site, is always featured on tuesday tweets, and wednesday treats. if you want to check them out, hit the link.

"dcorsetto" is the beautiful danielle corsetto, who draws/writes the comic girls with slingshots (addictive!). make sure you read it from the beginning, if you're going to start!

"johncmayer" recently released his newest single for fan review. go to this page to listen to it.

speaking of twitter, i jumped on #musicmonday for the first time. here are the songs i listed until i got distracted...

music monday

"if you really love me" [stevie wonder]
"everybody plays the fool" [main ingredient]
"second time around" [shalamar]
"stone free" [jimi hendrix]
"nasty girl" [vanity 6]
"it's got to be mellow" [can't remember who sings this!]
"mondo bongo" [joe strummer & the mescaleros]
"my drive thru" [N.E.R.D. f. santogold & julian casablancas]
"geek in the pink" [jason mraz]

not sure how i started @ stevie and ended with mr. a-z, but who cares? :)

see you tomorrow for wednesday treats!

hayhayhay. i was so beat yesterday that i forgot to post Tuesday Tweets! now that i'm actually on twitter, i keep finding people saying the most hilarious stuff... twitter's a little dry on the humor flow today, so i'll hit it next week - but these three were funny.

"kanye west is planning to interrupt patrick swayze's funeral
to say that michael jackson's was better."

"i think jay-z and kanye are butt buddies.
beyonce is just the side chick."

"tweetflash: boy kidnaps himself to hide bad report card (http://bit.ly/10f49S),
which basically proved that he was stupid."

so yesterday night was yet another open mic night @ Marathon Bar (40th & Walnut Streets).

honestly, every week it gets better and better. More Kale, Curly Castro, John F., Mr. McQn... i didn't know what to do with myself. and this one young lady seriously tore it down - i believe her name is Suzann Christine. she has the most beautiful voice - i gotta get some video on her! she ended up winning the opening spot for Sela on September 26th at the end of the night. i can't wait to see who's up next week...

so i was having trouble deciding on this week's Wednesday Treat, what with "A Night with AKiLLES & the OddiCY" coming up in three days.

you just can't find stuff like this anywhere, folks.

i'm excited for it, not only because it's going to be [undoubtedly] the hottest philly show of september (did i mention that DJ Phsh is going to be spinning that night?), but because one of my brothers - AND - my wifey are going to come all the way to philly for it.

that, and i'm going to be rocking the hottest dress. i'm so fyah. ;-D

this time's going to be pretty sweet, because anyone who came to the most recent brooklyn show gets in fo' free. and i'm looking forward to all that food that'll be flowing until midnight. don't be surprised if you show up and find yours tru-Lily stuffing her glamourous face with lil' foodies. ooh-wee.

as much as i find this a Wednesday Treat in preparation for Saturday, i feel like i should give ya'll a lil' sumthin-sumthin, so i'll kick it over to the funny side and throw a couple links your way. here's what i'm checking out in between classes (and sometimes during):
love me, for i am generous and sweet. :-D

alright, kids. time for me to go act like a quasi-responsible adult. lovelovelove!

so, much to the pleasure of The Politics Chick (goddess of crimson tresses and co-pilot extraordinaire), i am back on the block. er, blog.

and, true to form, i will resurrect my most oft-uttered quote: "so much has been going on!"

i've got photos, videos, links, & laughs to share with you all, my loves - even from my trip to san diego, which (i know) was over a cool thirty days ago.

my bad. twitter is actually more current. what a shame. (shakes head)

i am actually handwriting this post ear-ly on a yellow legal pad, enjoying the scenic view from new england back to philly. it's finally stopped raining, the sky is as blue as my platform pumps. now that the torrential monsoon of a weekend is behind me, i am chipper enough to offer a prize to anyone who can dig up a photo of yours tru-Lily @ the Boston Start! Heart Walk looking like a drowned rat.

who knows? there may even be more than one. (glamorous, i know.)

the first person to e-mail the photo to misslilyofphilly@gmail.com wins a lunch date with the lady herself. i know, this is slightly john mayer-ish of me, but what can i say? i love the mystery. and i love the man (yum). i'd marry him and we'd go paintballing on our honeymoon.

well, kiddies, there's something to keep you occupied until the next post before Throwback Thursday, when i'll catch you up on how awesome AK in BK Part 2 was last saturday.

until then! <3

man. i can't wait to see how my body reacts. for a while it seemed like i wasn't going to be affected - my internal clock is screwed anyway - but my being awake right now poses an interesting twist.

i'm actually pretty sleepy, but i'm so happy right now.

the men in my life are really something. i finally caught up with ja today, and to make up for having me wait so long for him, he took me to this gorgeous authentic mexican restaurant where i had THE most amazing carne asada (and horchata! mmmm...). while we were at the restaurant, he bought me a lily/rose bouquet, which smells heavenly, and after sketching me while i was writing, we went down to the marina, where i walked along the pacific ocean for the very first time.

all this was accompanied by nonstop conversation with many geeky references (family guy, futurama, various comics, random stuff from the ten years we've known each other), and even though we hadn't seen each other in four years, it's like we picked up right where we left off. i was so happy to see him today. best date ever!

i'll post pics of my gorgeous flowers and the awesome freehand sketch (which took all of two minutes, if that - i didn't even know he was drawing me) soon.

night/morning, my loves! your lovely lady lily must get some rest.

this city is GORGEOUS. i almost want to move here. but i can't give up on philly; as crazy as it might sound to some, it's my dream city (even though i hate the snow).

i took a ton of photos (and video!) today, and tomorrow when i go to pick up a mini USB cord after hanging out w/ my best friend Ja, i will be uploading all those goodies for everyone to see. right now i think i'm going to kick back and sip on some whiskey.

ahhh... nice little weekend vay-cay in cali... this place is kinda romantic - oooOOOooo. my mind keeps drifting. gotta take a sledgehammer to it to keep it skraight.

so i heard that last night's AKiLLES & the Oddicy appearance in Brooklyn was pretty crazy. Dice Raw and Pharoahe Monch came to see our boys tear it down. i wish i could've been there! i can't wait until the photos come up.

shouts to curly castro, who always has some sweet words for your lady Lily :) love that man.

so i'll have plenty of time to put what photos i have left up while i'm on the six hour evening flight to San Diego tomorrow night.

i'm excited, but as my boy kwes said, i know we're "gonna be jet-lagged like shit." oi. a'purrntly my love fame is going to be in cali too. i might be in LA saturday, boo!

my brain won't even function right now. tonight took it out of me. platform heels are a great contribution. 'night, all.

so yesterday i accompanied my manager to Elevator Fight's show @ Le Poisson Rouge in NY, and i gotta say, the venue is fly. although i'm having second thoughts about a show there, i can't deny that i had fun. absolutely refused to spend money at that expensive-ass bar, though (shouts to Suzie's across the street - alabama slammer, devil's tail, and some other drink i can't remember but was yummy).

the show was awesome, as usual. with my new phone (hooray!) i got a few pictures, and my digital camera was cooperating more than usual, so i'm pretty pleased with that.

i'll be back to post photos later - i've got a meeting to head to, and then World Cafe Live downstairs.

busy lady...

sometimes you just have to disappear for a little while, and my escape was made ten times better by the fact that i have no phone. until tomorrow that is (jersey, here i come).

tomorrow night is Elevator Fight's show @ Le Poisson Rouge in NY! i'm excited - i rarely get to go to live shows out there. usually if i'm in the big apple it's for a party or something like that. i'll be driving up from the dirty and then fleeing back to philly after the show. pray for me, i'm running my body into the ground...

i'm trying to take some crazy photos tomorrow, if my camera cooperates. let's hope. :-D

shouts to all the people who've been texting to my AIM and e-mail addresses, especially just to brighten up my days almost entirely spent sitting in front of a computer. you guys are so cute. after noon tomorrow i will officially be back in the land of the virtually living - even if i lost all my contacts. so i'm putting it out there now - make sure you send me a text so i can get your numbers!

i'm legitimately tired - sunday night, i stayed up until sunrise and slept till noon; monday night, i didn't sleep at all into tuesday morning, when i hopped in my car for my one-day run-away before the sun came up fully... and now it's 2.15 and i'm still awake. i gots problems, apparently...

'night all! tonight i will definitely be falling asleep with a smile on my face.

Yo...

so Hip-Hop and Sushi was dope - even if our sushi got stolen. AKiLLES and the OddiCY rocked that show out, and the turnout was quite pleasing. there was so much going on that i actually had to be hunted down to announce Philly Slick, who did their thing. all in all, a very good time. and the open bar was a perfect touch.

AKiLLES did his 5th performance of the week on sunday @ Bag of Balloons, the Phrequency/McJawn block party. that was a hell of a lot of fun. Vanache and i found it was the perfect place to be a kid again (even if you were drinking whiskey the night before):

word. there was four square, grilling, dancing, facepaint... people brought their dogs... of course the sun was blazing, but there were so many people of all ages having a good time. i'd like to give a big shout out to the girl who opened her home to us - i never found out your name, but you were an awesome hostess.

i love these men; they make my day.

and Fame makes three... :-D

this little boy was crushin' on the mic. so cute!

Tiffany Yoon from Phrequency took some of the dopest photos i've seen of this event... check out the ill action shot she got of my boys from the band:

you can find the rest of the photos @ Phrequency.

in other news, my phone's gone, guys! that means that all the photos i wanted to post (or a decent amount of them) are gone, too. but maybe this will be incentive for me to finally replace my camera. and no tweeting. but that's okay. twitter is ruining my life anyway.

so i was talking to Mister Sungee the other night and he told me that Pino Palladino (who is responsible for most - if not all - of my ongoing adoration of bass guitar) played on the majority of the D'Angelo album Voodoo. i never knew that, and now i'm scouring the internet to find out more. Rah's always the one to drop knowledge on us whippa-snappas.

i've always loved lower register instruments and actually spent a long time playing one. i'm thinking about getting back into it... it's been a long time, but i guess i shouldn't stay away from music for too long, huh?

man, i am so exhausted. time to get to work...

Aw, Man.

i know i say this after every blogging hiatus, but...

so much has been going on.

we're getting ready for Hip-Hop & Sushi this saturday. my boy perry lassin did a dope video as promotion - check it out. this is the first event that i'm hosting in philly, and i couldn't be more excited! i wish my dress would hurry up and come in the mail, though. i've only got 24 hours!

last night emcee unless and willpowerless tore it down at north star bar. i got a few photos with my super-sexy cameraphone (that's sarcasm, guys), which i'll be posting soon, but the show was fly! i definitely have to get my hands on his CD, the rubik's cube exclusive. i missed my chance last night! silk city was PACKED afterward, too. had a little mishap - some of my philly boys don't know how to keep their hands to themselves - but mister manager handled it swiftly and deftly. i'm lucky to have a monster for a boss, real talk.

i'm still waiting on my boy V (who i ran into @ silk city last night) to post SuperDope flicks from this past wednesday - he kept trying to snap me on the sneak tip while i was talking to people and generally just acting silly, and i got a cute shot with him, too! i want to see how they all came out :) i was so surprised to see him without camera in hand last night, but it must be exhausting to be the man on the dope flicks all the time. sometimes you need a vacation.

did anybody hit up the open mic this past tuesday @ panda bar? i got a couple shots from that, too - AKiLLES and El Smooth really rocked it out. not sure people were ready, even the next night @ blue bananas cafe when they did it again. all improv - elliot making beats on the fly and then having AK freestyle over them is buuuuuuutterrr....

oh, man. hip-hop and sushi... preparing for this event has been kinda crazy. monday my stylist maxi hooked me up with a cute short style to kinda go with the aesthetic. nobody recognizes me with short hair - i've been confusing people all week! i ran into my boy abe on the way to rittenhouse square the other day and he skated past me looking at me like he knew me.

"hey! remember me?"

"maybe," he said, giving me the ill strangeface.

i shrugged it off and a couple blocks later i heard a skateboard fast approaching behind me - it was abe! and he couldn't figure out where he knew me from. when i finally reminded him (SuperDope!), he was like, "girl, you can't change it all up on me like that!"

my peoples are so silly.

alright, kiddies. it's time for miss lily to get to work - can't keep the boss waiting.

photos to come soon! mwahr...
